Time of the Child by Niall Williams, released Nov. 19, 2024; 304 pp. From the author of This Is Happiness (which we read in May 2020), this is a compassionate, life-affirming novel about the Christmas season that transforms the small Irish town of Faha. Set over the course of December 1962 in the same small village as in his previous novel, Williams tells the tale of Doctor Jack Troy and his eldest daughter Ronnie whose lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care. Tuesday, January 20, 2026. 6:30-8:30 pm; Heart, Be at Peace: A Novel by Donal Ryan, published 2025, winner of the Irish Book of the Year; 208 pp. From the author of The Spinning Heart, which we read in 2017, this is his new novel about smalltown Ireland that explores a community on the mend and the power of love and trauma to both bring people together and divide them. A stunning, lyrical novel told in 21 voices, it reveals a community that looks to overcome the betrayals, secrets, and grudges that can divide families, neighbors, and entire generations. Tuesday, March 24, 2026. 6:30-8:30 pm; The Woman on Platform Two by Laura Anthony (who lives in Kildare), published March 2025, 336 pp. This book is based on a little-known but true event. In 1970’s Dublin, all forms of contraception are strictly forbidden, but an intrepid group of women risked everything to change that. This is a haunting and powerful story of feminine resistance and resilience that reminds us all of where we started and how far we still have to go. (Book recommended by Paula McGill) *Please note: the date is the 4th Tuesday in March to allow us to celebrate March 17th!)
