The Latest News from the Irish Heritage Society of Milford website:Reminder: IHSM Monthly Luncheon June 21st, Aldario's, 12:30 pm (by Maureen Moore, published Thursday, 13 June 2013 00:00) Just a reminder that the June date for the monthly lunch will be held on Friday, 6/21, 12:30 pm, at Aldario’s, 240 Naugatuck Ave., Milford. The luncheon will feature a prix fixe menu with appetizer, entree, coffee and dessert, and either a glass of wine or soft drink, for $12 total, which will be collected as you arrive. How Irish is Samuel Beckett?

Samuel Beckett’s likeness appears on an Irish commemorative coin issued in 2006 in honor of the 100th anni-versary of his birth. But the novelist, playwright, poet, theater director and recipient of the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature often has been considered “beyond the Pale” or boundaries of Irish literature. Beckett spent most of his adult life in Paris and has tended to be seen as rejecting or “transcending” his Irish background with the use of “nameless , highly abstract settings to reflect the basic, universal human condition.”
Fairfield University associate professor of English Nels Pearson, the speaker for our June meeting, is among a group of scholars taking a long second look “at the Irish cultural and historical significance of many of these presumably nameless settings.” Pearson, who specializes in Irish and British literary modernism, will describe “how the actual act (or moment) of leaving Ireland is repeatedly figured in Beckett’s stories and plays and how new developments in cosmopolitan theory illuminate the ways that his works speak to both Irish/particular and global/general themes at the same time.”
Pearson has written articles for numerous academic journals and is writing a book: Irish Cosmopolitanism: Location and Dislocation in James Joyce, Elizabeth Bowen and Samuel Beckett.

Sergeant at Arms - Ed Mead (by Lynn Walsh, published Tuesday, 28 May 2013 14:11) I have been a charter member of the IHSM since September 2006. I am a lifelong resident of Milford and have been active in the Milford community, volunteering through local organizations and with the Republican Town Committee. I currently serve as Vice Chairman on the city of Milford Planning and Zoning Board.
I have been married for 34 years and we have two grown children.
I have been held the position of Vice President and President and Sergeant at Arms and am actively involved in the annual festivals, Lyle James Memorial Golf Tournaments and many other activities of the club.
I love this town, and not only want to keep it a great town to live in; I really want to be a part of helping grow this Irish club. We have a lot of interest and I believe it is important to all of us to keep the Irish culture alive. Recently, I have been privileged to get together with the Irish consulate general who agrees that we, in the United States can do a lot to keep the Irish heritage alive.

My Irish roots go back to Ireland, County Sligo and Galway and I still have family there. My grandparents from both my mother and father came to the Boston area in the 1800 hundreds.
As President I will continue to work with all the different committees, the E - Board, and the members of the Irish Heritage Society and continue to promote our Irish Heritage within our community and other Irish organizations throughout our State.

My name is Lisa Smith and I thank you for the opportunity to run for the 2013-2014 Secretary position.
A little bit about me...I am originally from Brooklyn, New York and have lived in Milford since 1982. I attended Milford Public Schools and graduated from Lauralton Hall. I am a Registered Nurse and presently work for the New Haven Public Schools as the Health Coordinator for the Head Start Program. I have excellent computer and note-taking skills, with a strong attention to detail, which make me an ideal candidate for Secretary.
Since becoming a member in 2011, everyone at the IHSM has been very welcoming, which allowed me to "jump right in" and get involved. I have volunteered with the Irish Festival; walked in the Milford and Mystic parades; and, attended several events such as the annual picnic, adult Christmas party, the Irish Man & Woman of the Year dinner, and the children's Easter party. I have been a member of the Festival Committee and the Activities Committee. As the mom to two young boys, David (age 8) and Michael (age 6), I am happy they have this opportunity to learn more about their Irish. I hope to continue to help create more opportunities for young families in Milford to become active members of our Club.

I have proven myself to be honest, trustworthy and competent in holding an Officer Position with this club. My Irish heritage has always been a part of my family upbringing; I have Irish roots on both my maternal and paternal sides. As President I hope to work closely with the Past President and all the members of the Executive Board in helping this organization to move forward and promote Irish heritage throughout the community. member for a minimum of two consecutive years, with dues paid in full for those years, and the current year.

The management will offer us complimentary appetizers during the Happy Hour period, along with discounted beer, wine, and well drink prices. Reservations are open for Tara Theatre Production: Remembrance, June 13, 14, 15 at Stratford Theater (by Maureen Moore, published Monday, 29 April 2013 00:00) Reservations and payments for 2013 Tara Theatre performances will be taken at the April 30th general membership meeting at Costa Azzura. The production this year is "Remembrance" by Neil Graham, and will be presented on June 13th, 14th, and 15th at the Stratford Theatre, at 7:30 pm each night.

A little bit about the play:
In a graveyard in a divided city, love declares itself. A formula as old as "Romeo and Juliet" returns in Graham Reid’s comedy "Remembrance." The title refers to the name of the day reserved in Ireland for commemorating the war dead, like Memorial Day in the United States.
Except for the animosity between the Catholics and the Protestants, you don't have to know the specifics of the troubles in Belfast, a city of hate in economic collapse, with strict boundaries, to get the play. It's about how prejudice can tear love apart, and it mirrors other situations with universal themes.
The play deals with violence and chaos and bigotry and the possibility of love's survival, but “Remembrance” also shows us the way people work and eat and drink and talk and get up and go out amidst all that - and how the young disbelieve that people in their 60's are capable of romantic and sexual love.
